Highlife is a music genre that started in West Africa, along the coastal cities of present-day Ghana, in the 19th century, during its history as a colony of the British and through its trade routes in coastal areas. It describes multiple local fusions of African meter and western jazz melodies.

“Adaha” is considered the earliest form of highlife music performed in the country. It was created by the blend of syncopated march music fused with Caribbean and local Ghanaian music. Krobo Matakole Kainka Brass Band, 1897-8. Palm wine music was developed as a distinctive musical style in Ghana in the 1920s and 1930s.
Emmanuel Tettey Mensah (31 May 1919 – 19 July 1996) was a Ghanaian musician who was regarded as the “King of Highlife” music. He led the Tempos, a band that toured widely in West Africa.
